Social Engineering

Social Engineering
Social engineering is a trick used to manipulate people into giving up confidential information. Criminals use it to steal passwords, bank information, or install malware on your computer. They may use fake emails or calls and pretend to be someone you know.

What Does a Social Engineering Attack Look Like?

Here are some common examples:
  • Phishing Emails: Fake emails that look like they're from trusted companies (banks, retailers) asking for your username and password, or personal information.
  • Impersonation: Pretending to be someone you know (like a friend or coworker) to get you to take or authorise an action.
  • Pretexting: Creating a believable story to gain your trust and get you to reveal sensitive personal information.
  • Baiting: Offering something tempting (like a random prize, gossip article or a sports feed) to lure you into clicking on a malicious link.

Prevention

Never give out your personal or sensitive information. This includes your username, password, OTPs, PINs, family members' names and/ or dates of birth etc.

Remember: Never click on links or download attachments from unknown senders and be wary of unsolicited requests for personal information.
