I&M Bank joins thousands in the fight against HIV/AIDS at the 2025 Kabaka Birthday Run

Despite a rainy Sunday morning, Lubiri, Mengo, was buzzing with energy, as thousands of runners from across the country, turned up to take part in the 12th edition of the Kabaka Birthday Run. I&M Bank, the official bank partner of the Kabaka Birthday Run, joined the throng of runners who braved the inclement weather for the annual showpiece. The bank fielded a team of tens of runners, as a demonstration of its commitment to support communities, health, unity, and cultural heritage. The event was flagged off by the Kabaka, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, who was flanked by the Katikkiro- Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, and other Kingdom officials. In his message, delivered by the Katikkiro, the Kabaka highlighted that HIV/AIDS remains one of the biggest challenges facing the nation and the world. He urged the public to remain vigilant, informed, and united in combating the spread of the virus. Just like the past years, this year’s run attracted runners of all ages — including students, athletes, members of running clubs, corporates, business leaders, politicians, and leaders at various levels. This year's edition marks Kabaka Mutebi’s 70th birthday that is slated for next Sunday- April 13th. Themed ‘Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child and the Fight to End HIV/AIDS by 2030,’ this year’s edition aimed to emphasize the importance of men’s involvement in health initiatives. I&M Bank CEO- Robin Bairstow, applauded the power of people coming together, and the bold steps the run has taken towards fighting HIV/AIDS and building a healthier society. "We are extremely proud to be part of this cause. It’s more than just a run; it’s a movement for change. When we come together, we become stronger, and together we can fight this challenge head-on. Let’s continue to stand united in this fight against HIV/AIDS, and let this day be a reminder that together, we can create lasting change," Bairstow said. Launched in 2014, this iconic event foregoes elite competition, it instead focuses on community and charity, uniting people to support local causes and contribute to meaningful social impact. Annette Nakiyaga, the Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications at I&M Bank, re-emphasized the bank’s commitment towards supporting causes that improve communities, by leveraging their four CSR pillars. “We leverage our four CSR pillars — enabling giving, economic empowerment, educational and skills development, and environmental conservation — to support the communities around us. The Kabaka Birthday Run has become a wonderful tradition that brings all of us together with a common goal—working towards a healthier Uganda. The goal to eliminate HIV/AIDS by 2030 is something we fully believe in, and we are happy to be part of this journey toward a healthier and stronger community," she said. While Lubiri hosted the main event, the Kabaka Birthday Run also took place at various county headquarters across the country, as well as among Ugandan communities in the diaspora, reflecting the event's widespread appeal. In Kampala, participants enjoyed the routes that showcased some of the city's most iconic landmarks, including Mengo Palace, Kabaka’s Lake, Masengere House, Namirembe Cathedral, Makerere University, the Uganda Museum, Uganda Golf Course, Gaddafi Mosque, and the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, among others. I&M Bank returns as official bank partner for 12th edition of the Kabaka Birthday Run, to continue the fight against HIV/AIDS

I&M Bank Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment as the official bank partner for the 12th edition of the Kabaka Birthday Run, slated for Sunday April 6th, 2025. The 2025 Kabaka Birthday Run was officially launched yesterday- Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Bulange Mengo, and marked the unveiling of the 2025 kit. The launch event was presided over by the Buganda Kingdom Premier- Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, and was graced by the Deputy Katikkiro- Owek. Twaha Kawaase, as well as Buganda Kingdom cabinet ministers, event partners, and community leaders. The theme for this year's run is- ‘Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child and the Fight to End HIV/AIDS by 2030,' and aims to highlight the importance of men’s involvement in health initiatives. The Katikkiro noted that although HIV/AIDS is being tackled through initiatives like the Kabaka Birthday Run, individual effort and caution is still key as the best prevention measure. "I urge young people to embrace the use of condoms, practice abstinence, and consider circumcision. Experts tell us that circumcision helps reduce the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. We must all take personal caution as the best way to continue this fight, that’s the best way we shall win it," the Katikkiro said. He added that the Kabaka is committed to this fight, and to date, Buganda Kingdom has had six years of this effort. “Our practice since we started the Kabaka Birthday Run was to support a health theme for three years. However, with UNAIDS’ lglobal effort to eradicate HIV/AIDS by 2030, we decided to commit more time, because HIV/AIDS remains an existential threat that affects everyone indiscriminately,” the Katikkiro added. I&M Bank CEO, Robin Bairstow expressed stated delight towards the continuation of the partnership with the Buganda Kingdom, to support the Kabaka Birthday Run, which he said has become a key event on their calendar. "The Kabaka Birthday Run is a very important initiative because it not only brings people together to celebrate His Majesty Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, but also helps us all work towards a future where HIV/AIDS will no longer be a threat," Bairstow said. "I want to thank the Buganda Kingdom for its deliberate focus on public health. The kingdom’s dedication to improving the well-being of communities through initiatives like this is truly inspirational, and we are honored to be partners on this journey," he added. Annette Nakiyaga- the I&M Bank Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, re-affirmed the bank’s commitment towards initiatives that make a real difference in people’s lives. “I&M Bank remains committed to supporting projects that promote positive change and improve the well-being of communities. We believe that initiatives like the Kabaka Birthday Run play a vital role in making a real difference and helping build a healthier future for everyone,” Nakiyaga stated. Sarah Nakku Kibuuka, the UNAIDS Community Mobilisation & Networking Advisor, highlighted that the fight against HIV AIDs is likely to take a challenging twist, due to funding challenges that UNAIDS is currently facing, that resulted from the funding freeze by the US government. She however encouraged promoting habits that help to prevent HIV/AIDS, as the immediate alternative for everyone involved in the fight against the disease. Canon Dr. Ruth Senyonyi- the Chairperson of the Uganda AIDS Commission, thanked the Buganda Kingdom for its continued efforts in the battle against HIV/AIDS, particularly in reducing stigma. She added that in 2024, Uganda had an HIV prevalence rate of 5.1% among adults aged 15 to 49, with women experiencing a higher prevalence (6.6%), compared to men (3.6%). The rate was notably higher among women living in urban areas (9.8%) than those in rural areas (6.7%). Additionally, HIV prevalence among children aged 0-14 was recorded at 0.5%. The Kabaka Birthday Run is supported by other partners including Airtel, Daily Monitor, Vision Group, Crown Beverages, BBS, CBS, K2 Telecom, UNAIDS, and the Uganda AIDS Commission.
